Objectives
i. To evaluate the performance of the 38 mango collections under various Agro ecological condition in Uganda in terms of yield, pest and disease resistance, adaptation to environmental condition (soils and weather)
How the objectives are to be attained
In Uganda there are Agrozones of Lake Victoria agrozone, Northern (mid western, western, north western and eastern zones). The 38 mango collections are being tried in all these agrozones.
Progress so far
A germplasm trial of 38 mango collections has been established in each of the agrozones, data collection on going.
Future package
- High yielding varieties well adapted to each zone will be released to the farmers
- Common diseases and pests for mangoes in each zone will be established
- Control methods for pests and diseases in each zone will be provided
Goals
- Promote high yielding, well adapted mango varieties in each zone for commercial production
- Contribute food security nutritional improvement in each zone
- Contribute towards employment opportunity in each zone through starting up mango processing industries, (production of juice and drying)
